Franklin County Commission approves higher rental fees for Armory

Franklin County Commissioners have approved new rates for renting the armory in Apalachicola.

Renovation work on the historic building is basically complete, and the building will now be available for events like conventions, parties and weddings.

The new rates are 250 dollars a day or 600 dollars for a weekend from Friday through Sunday plus a refundable 150 dollar key and cleanup deposit.

Until now, the cost has been 400 dollars for weekend use with no deposit.

County Coordinator Michael Moron said the deposit is needed because there have been problems in the past of people leaving without returning the keys or cleaning up the building after their event.

One of the main reasons for the rate increase is that the county has just installed an air conditioning system which will add to the county’s cost of operating the building.

Commissioners pointed out that the building itself is also much nicer because now it has a new warming kitchen and handicapped accessible restrooms.

Groups that have already put money down to rent the building will be allowed to pay the old rate.

The commission said they do not plan to allow a fee waiver for armory usage, even for non-profit groups.
