Air force to create landing sites in the Apalachicola National Forest

The Air Force is creating a remote landing site in the Apalachicola National Forest in Franklin County.

County commissioners were informed last week that the Air Force is creating 13 landing zones in the Apalachicola National Forest, 12 are in Liberty County and only one is in Franklin County.

It is on the west side of Highway 65 on a site that is already cleared off and may have had a building on it at one time.

The landing sites are to train pilots on the CV-22 Osprey planes which can rotate their propellers so they can land like a helicopter.

The air force says the remote landing sites are needed because of congested airspace and increased competition for use of the Eglin Air Force Base complex.
