Sarah Mac's voice at times has the full power and grit of Janis Joplin, the sweet, soothing breathy tone of Feist or Edie Brickell, and the gut-wrenching raw tones of an old soul or gospel singer. Paired with Charlie's intricate, sultry guitar work and Claire's solid, intriguing bass lines, this trio creates a powerful live experience that has earned them a loyal, growing following as well as given them the opportunity to provide support for acts such as the Lee Boys, Shawn Colvin, Robert Randolph, Marc Roberge (O.A.R.), and Shawn Mullins.

Pygmy Boats ( www.pygmyboats.com) is a manufacturer of high-quality small boat kits which has selected the Apalachicola Maritime Museum as an instructional program partner. In this capacity the AMM offers building classes to the public during which builders will construct their own wood kayak under the guidance of AMM Wooden Boat School director Ron Dierolf and Assistant Director Spencer Fegley. Pygmy Boats, founded in 1986, is headquartered in Port Townsend, WA. Their boat models include 21 kayak separate designs, two of which been voted Best Wooden Kayak by Sea Kayaker magazine on several occasions. All designs are made of British Standard 1088 okoume marine plywood and are light, rugged, and beautiful, head-turning craft. Their performance rivals any production kayak on the market.
All sessions for building Pygmy Boats with the AMM can be booked online through the Pygmy website. During the building sessions builders will construct their kayak from pre-cut wooden parts using the "stitch-and-glue" method. This process, which is used on almost all plywood boats, is a simple, straightforward method of building a strong, beautiful wooden boat. Upon completion of the session the builder will have boat ready for varnishing - a process completed by the builder at home. The building process spans seven days and finishing can take an additional week
Any questions concerning the classes and the boats should be directed to Pygmy Boats. Also, please feel free to contact the museum at woodenboatschool@ammf.org. We are honored by our partnership with Pygmy to be their Southeast building center and instruction program.

Patriot's Day Celebration
No need to wait until the Fourth of July to express your patriotism.
The fourth Patriot's Day celebration in Apalachicola not only features one of America's premier war and foreign correspondents as guest speaker, but a book signing and Cajun cookout as well. The event will be held onSaturday, April 30 from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Veteran's Memorial Plaza, the home of the Three Servicemen, Detail, Statue.
Guest Speaker Joe Galloway is the co-author of "We Were Soldiers Once-And Young" which was made into a critically acclaimed movie starring Mel Gibson. The Bronze Star recipient is the only civilian during the Vietnam War to have been awarded a medal of valor, after rescuing wounded soldiers under fire during the Ia Drang Battle.
"Just wait until you hear him speak," said Patriot's Day organizer and Gold Star Widow Linda George. "He uses no notes. He doesn't write anything down. Everything is extemporaneous."
Galloway not only served four tours as a war correspondent in Vietnam but rode with the 24th Infantry in Desert Shield/Desert Storm and made trips to Iraq to cover the war in 2003 and 2005-2006. He worked for 15 years covering foreign postingsThe late Gen. H. Normal Schwarzkopf called him "the finest combat correspondent of our generation-a soldier's reporter and a soldier's friend."
Organizer and U.S. Army veteran Jimmy Mosconis said the event is held in order to honor all veterans and active duty service members as well as to raise funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the Three Servicemen, Detail, Statue. Mosconis spearheaded the Three Servicemen Statue South nonprofit organization which raised more than $1 million to have the monument made and brought to Apalachicola.
Galloway will be signing copies of his book on Friday, April 29th from 3 to 5 p.m. at Downtown Books in Apalachicola and on the day of the event at the Plaza beginning at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. and the cookout at 12 noon. Three Servicemen, Detail hats and t-shirts will be on sale and brick pavers will be available for purchase by those who would like to have a paver installed at the park to honor a veteran or loved one.
Proceeds from the event and the book sales will be used for the upkeep and maintenance of the Three Servicemen, Detail, Statue and Veteran's Memorial Plaza. The Plaza is located at 230 Market Street in Apalachicola. For more information, contact Mosconis at 850-653-6044 or visit the website at www.threeservicemenstatuesouth.org.
