The
Franklin County School Board will hold a special meeting this evening at 730 to
discuss possible changes to a planned special election on a referendum that
would allow the school district to increase its operating budget.
The referendum is the same as one held
in 2012 when the district asked voters to allow the school district to increase
its operating budget by a half mill.
If voters approve the measure again it
will allow the school district to free up construction money and put it in the
operating budget where it can be used for teacher and employee pay as well as
other operating expenses.
The move is technically a tax increase
though taxpayers shouldn’t see an increase in their tax bills because the
increase in the operating budget will be offset by a decrease in the school
system’s building fund.
The school district is planning
to hold a special election on the issue on June the 7th, but is now
considering changes to that plan.
Questions were raised during the school
board’s regular meeting on Monday as to why the referendum won’t be held during
this year’s primaries in August.
Not only would that bring out
more voters, but it would also save the school district about 22 thousand
dollars.
The school board will hold a special meeting
tonight to consider the issue again and discuss whether to move the special
election to the August primaries or possibly to have the election done as a
mail-in ballot.
Anyone interested in commenting on the
referendum can join tonight’s special meeting – again its at 730 at the School
Board meeting room at 85 school road in Eastpoint.
