Alachua County man hit by sturgeon on the Suwanee River

Jumping sturgeon have claimed their first victim of 2016.
66year old Ronald Dick of Alachua County was boating along the Suwanee River on Saturday taking part in a fishing tournament when a 4 to 5 foot long sturgeon jumped into the boat and collided with the man – knocking him unconscious.
He was taken to the hospital and released.
Sturgeon can grow to 8 feet in length and weigh up to 200 pounds; on average they weigh about 40 pounds.
They can leap more than 7 feet out of the water and have hard plates along their backs to make them even more dangerous.

During 2015, there were eight injuries and a fatality resulting from sturgeon strikes.
