Jumping sturgeon have claimed their first victim of 2016.
66year old Ronald Dick of Alachua County was boating along
the Suwanee River on Saturday taking part in a fishing tournament when a 4 to 5
foot long sturgeon jumped into the boat and collided with the man – knocking him
unconscious.
He was taken to the hospital and released.
Sturgeon can grow to 8 feet in length and weigh up to 200
pounds; on average they weigh about 40 pounds.
They can leap more than 7 feet out of the water and have
hard plates along their backs to make them even more dangerous.
During 2015, there were eight injuries and a fatality
resulting from sturgeon strikes.
