The Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission will meet in Franklin County in June, and it could be
an exciting event.
FWC meetings are usually well
attended and bring hundreds of people and some good advertising for the area.
The FWC is expecting a bigger
crowd than usual for their June meeting because they are going to discuss
holding another black bear hunt this year, and there are a lot of people with
strong feelings on that particular issue.
Florida
held its first black bear hunt in over 20 years last year - it ended after only
two days.
295
black bears were killed during the hunt.
There are a number of people who
feel the black bear hunt is unnecessary and that the black bear population is
not yet large enough to handle hunting.
There are also a lot of people
who feel the black bear hunt is needed to control the population and keep bears
out of neighborhoods.
The FWC had planned to meet in
the courthouse in Apalachicola, but have changed the venue to the Franklin
County School so there will be more parking and room for the expected crowd.
The meeting will be held June the
22nd and 23rd.
This will be the fourth time the
FWC has met in Franklin County over the past 5 years.
