Are you a writer who can pique a reader’s curiosity, effectively relate the message to different audiences and excite people about why they should care? Are you excited by the challenge of reaching diverse audiences through a range of mediums?
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is looking for an experienced Interpretive Writer and Planner to add to our Public Access and Wildlife Viewing Services interpretation team.
Duties include: researching, writing and editing text for interpretive signs, web pages, social media and publications; editing your own work for clarity and flow; proofreading maps; photo editing and coordination with photographer, cartographer, graphic artist or web designer. Includes interpretive planning and theme development for interpretation components of Recreation Management Plans.
Knowledge, skills and abilities include:
Position is full time OPS with health benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience,
$38,500 - $47,216. Requires occasional travel statewide to wildlife management areas which may be in remote areas with rustic conditions. Evening and weekend work on occasion.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a natural science, but degrees in interpretation, environmental education, recreation, English, creative writing or journalism, with a strong interest and experience as a naturalist, will also be considered. Master’s degree is preferred. Minimum of three years of experience as a science-based nature writer. Must have valid Florida driver license.
Interview candidates will be required to submit one sample of original interpretation or natural history writing and a one-page essay about why you are the best candidate.
