The
local extension office has been recognized for its work in protecting sea
turtles from man-made lights.
Extension Director Erik Lovestrand told county commissioners
this week that his office was recognized with first place award for the
promotional materials developed during the first year of their turtle lighting
grant.
The award was presented at the biennial conference for the
Association of Natural Resources Extension Professional in Burlington, Vermont.
The promotional materials, which included printed information,
radio psa’s and a website, were created
as part of a multi-county project to protect nesting sea turtles from man-made
lights.
The program focused on making areas around conservation
properties in the county darker – areas of impact included Lighthouse Park on
St. George Island, the Phipps Preserve at Alligator Point and the Jeff Lewis
Wilderness Preserve on Dog Island.
