The Florida Defense Support Task Force awarded $1.8
million dollars in grants this week to support seven defense projects across 13
Florida counties.
That
includes money to help Eglin Air Force Base do non-hazardous training in the
Tate’s Hell State Forest.
The $250,000 project will allow Eglin to continue to work
with the Florida Forest Service to schedule non-hazardous military missions in
Blackwater River State Forest and Tate’s Hell State Forest.
The forests would be used to train pilots on the
CV-22 Osprey planes which can rotate their propellers so they can land like a
helicopter.
The current sites are mainly in Liberty County,
though there is one in Franklin County too.
The expanded training area is designed to relieve congestion in
already established sites around Eglin Air Force Base.
The plan has been met with skepticism locally because of
concerns of the impacts the training could have on the environment and on
public access to the state forest, which is a popular place for hunters and
outdoor enthusiasts.
