From everyone at the Research Institute, we hope you have a fun and safe Fourth of July weekend! Boat traffic will be increasing, and it's important for operators to be on the lookout for manatees and other marine life in Florida waters. Watercraft-related injuries and deaths are far too common for this imperiled marine mammal, and there are preparations and actions boaters and the general public can take to protect and conserve manatees and other wildlife during this busy holiday weekend. Please remember to contact our Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922 if you see a distressed, injured, entangled or dead manatee in Florida waters.

Recent footage from an FWRI nest camera project captured the moment nestlings left the nest for the very first time. A parent brings food and carries away a fecal sac to keep the nest area clean, and one nestling leaves the nest but quickly changes its mind. It’s a cheerful scene for a subspecies at the brink of extinction.
