Sea
turtle nests are beginning to hatch and the turtle patrol at the Apalachicola
National Estuarine Research Reserve will be taking interested members of the
public on beach walks to help excavate hatched nests.
According to the Research
Reserve, this has been a record year for sea turtle nests.
The earliest nests are now beginning
to hatch, and as that happens, the turtle patrol examines the nests to see how
many of the eggs hatched or what might have prevented some of the eggs from
hatching.
This year the turtle patrol has a
limited number of spaces available for interested members of the public to be a
part of the excavations.
Since there is now way of knowing
when the nests will hatch, the Research reserve will accept reservations and
call people on the list when a nest is ready for excavation.
The excavations will take place between
7 and 9 in the mornings on St. George Island.
To place your name on the call
list, call Emily Jackson at 670-7743.
