Watch: New FWC Research YouTube Videos
FWC’s queen conch research program has been surveying queen conch throughout the Florida Keys since 1987, and they perform yearly surveys in order to determine trends in the recovery of Florida’s queen conch population.
Brandon Bassett is a marine mammal biologist at FWRI's Marine Mammal Pathobiology Laboratory in St. Petersburg, Fla. When he's not at the lab managing our manatee mortality database and conducting necropsies with his team, he's in the field rescuing, releasing and studying manatees and other marine mammals. Our latest staff spotlight video goes into more detail about Brandon's career. He shared an inspiring story about one particular manatee he helped rescue, and also offered some advice to students who are pursuing competitive careers in marine mammal research.
In this two-minute animation, you will see the movements of a tagged manatee during a three-day period in winter as it repeatedly moved between a warm-water refuge and cooler feeding grounds. For more information about this animation, please visit our website on manatee radiotelemetry and tracking.
