November Events and Activities in Franklin County

Birders Flock to the Coast This MonthDuring November, three of Franklin County's most popular migrating bird stopovers are located at two state parks and a federal wildlife preserve.  And where the birds are, you're sure to find the birders too!
Bald Point State Park, located at the extreme eastern tip of Franklin County,  is considered one of the best areas in the Southeast to view the annual bird and butterfly migrations. Some of the migrating bird species you might encounter on a quiet morning or late afternoon might include warblers, Peregrin Falcons, hawks and Bald Eagles.  Common migrating species of butterflies include the Gulf Fritillary and Monarch. 
Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park. There are more than 300 species listed on the St. George Island State Park birding list. During the fall several varieties of terns may be observed. 
St. Vincent Island, a federally owned National Wildlife Refuge at the westernmost end of Franklin County, is also an important stop-off point in the Gulf of Mexico region for migratory birds, including the majestic Wood Stork.

SGI State Park Hosts Coffee in the CampgroundEvents During November
The Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park begins its popular Coffee In the Campground series of family events this month. Unless otherwise noted, the programs run from 9-11 a.m. and are free with paid park entry. 
Sponsored by the Friends of Franklin County State Parks, the Coffee in the Campground  are held in the interpretive building in the family campground. And yes, there really will be coffee! 
November 12 Butterflies- Educating the visitors about identifying common types of butterflies on beautiful St. George Island State Park.  Rangers will discuss the lifecycle of butterflies and some basic facts.
November 19 -Introduction to Birding- Join this ranger led program in the campground interpretive center to learn methods of identification and also how to use your field guide to its full potential. Bring field guides, binoculars and a breakfast item to share if you would like. Coffee will be provided. 
November 26 - Local Native American Tribes and their history to this area. 
Panhandle Players Open Season with
An Evening of One Acts November 18-20
The Panhandle Players will open their 2016/2017 season with “An Evening of One Acts” at their new home, The Chapman Auditorium in Apalachicola.  Don’t miss Bad Auditions by Bad Actors, a 14-character comedy, followed by the comedic thriller, Pandora’s Revenge, and then the hilarious farce, The Chiropodist.  Tickets are available online at PanhandlePlayers.com.  Tickets may also be purchased at the door the day of each performance.Details here.

Festival of Trees November 21 in ApalachicolaThe Apalachicola Area Historic Society kicks off the holiday season with their annual Festival of Trees reception on Monday, November 21. Come see fabulous holiday trees created by Apalachicola’s talented artists and creative merchants, being offered for sale by silent auction for just one week beginning with the kickoff gala November 21.  More than 20 local artists and volunteers decorate table-top sized trees that will be available for purchase. 
Christmas Celebration Friday, November 25
The Apalachicola Christmas Celebrationwill light up the lovely historic town of Apalachicola on Friday, November 25 from 4-8 p.m., the day after Thanksgiving. The streets will be lined with luminaries and filled with holiday spirit. Merchants will be open late and the sounds of carolers will echo through the streets filling the evening with the Christmas spirit. Santa will arrive on a shrimp boat at 4 p.m. at the City Dock on Water Street. Come back the following week on Saturday, December 3 from 10-3 pm for the Holiday Fresh Market in downtown Apalachicola. Buy hand crafted local specialties such as baked goods, artwork, wood carving, pottery, hand knitted goods. 
Carrabelle Holiday on the Harbor December 10
Join the holiday fun on Saturday, December 10 at Carrabelle's Holiday on the Harbor event along Marine Street. The event, which runs from noon till 9 pm, will feature live entertainment, holiday shopping, festival food, holidays treats and goodies and visit with Santa, and fireworks. This event is free to attend and enjoy the festivities. Later in the evening, pull up a chair along the river and enjoy the annual BoatHoliday Boat Parade of Lights. Parade starts at 6:30 pm at the mouth of the river and proceeds to the Carrabelle Bridge. Watch from any spot along the riverfront.
SGI's Island LightsDecember 2 
Greet Santa when he arrives at St. George Island's Lighthouse Park on Friday, December 2and enjoy the festive illuminating of holiday lights on the Cape St. George Lighthouse, Visitor Center, and along Franklin Boulevard.  Hot chocolate, cookies, carolers, and Santa’s sleigh full of gifts for the children contribute to the island holiday spirit!  Santa and tree lighting will occur about sunset. Learn more.
Ilse Newell Holiday Concert December 11
On Sunday, December 11, the Ilse Newell (IN) Concert series will present its annual holiday concert performed by the Bay Area Choral Society at Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola. The performance begins at  4pm with a reception to follow the concert. Details here.

Florida Seafood Festival Nov. 4-5
The 53rd  Annual Florida Seafood Festival kicks off in Apalachicola November 4-6. Heralded as the State’s oldest maritime event, this annual fall classic is a celebration of the Franklin County commercial seafood industry. The Florida Seafood Festival promises to feature delicious seafood, arts and crafts exhibits, seafood related events and musical entertainment including recording artist Rodney Atkins. For more information, click here.
Pokemon Go Event
in Apalachicola
Join fellow Pokemon enthusiasts for an afternoon of Pokemon Go in Apalachicola on Thursday, November 3.
The event will commence at the Fort Coombs Armory at 1 pm and will spread out throughout the town. Local businesses will provide charging stations for players free of charge. Details here.
Oyster Roast November 4
Love oysters? Don't miss the annual Downtown Oyster Roast on November 4 6-9 pm.  The event, sponsored by the Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce, will feature roasted oysters, oysters on the half shell, creamy artichoke, oyster and thyme soup, fresh local shrimp and more. St. George Light Full Moon Climb November 14
Watch the sun set and full moon rise from the top of the Cape St. George Lighthouse on Monday, November 14  from 5:30-7:30 pm. Tickets are $15.00 per person, or $10.00 for St. George Lighthouse Association members, and include light hors d'oeuvres and a sparkling cider toast to the Full Moon.  Click here for more information.
Farmers Market November 12, 26 in Apalachicola
This local favorite is held the second and fourth Saturday of each month at the Mill Pond Pavillion at the Scipio Creek Marina in Apalachicola. Features seafood, produce, honey, homemade breads, pies, and other regional specialties offered from 9 am-1pm
Camp Gordon Johnston Golf Tourney Nov. 11-12
The 6th Annual Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum USO Dance/Silent Auction & Golf Tournament will be held November 11-12, 2016. As part of a full weekend event, a USO style dance and Silent Auction will be held Friday, November 11 at 6PM ET with hamburgers & hotdogs, and a beer or wine, for a $20.00 entry fee.  The golf tournament will then be held Saturday, November 12, 2016with proceeds to support the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle. Details here.
Environmental Workshops
The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) will host a workshop on Oysters on 
November 10from 1-4 pm. Discover the important role oysters play in the health of Apalachicola Bay. ANERR will host  a Living Shorelines Workshop on Tuesday, December 6, from 2-4:30 pm. The workshop will discuss living shorelines vs. hardened shorelines. On December 9 ANERR will host
workshop to educate visitors about the estuary. Participants will learn about the habitats and creatures that make up our estuary and how the river and bay are intricately connected. 
Rio Carrabelle Hosts Music EventsRio Carrabelle, a nonprofit art exhibit and music venue in Carrabelle, will host two upcoming music events. The Recollections, a jazz ensemble group will perform on November 4. On Friday, December 9, Rio Carrabelle will host  an evening of Mambo, Merengue, Bolero and Cha Cha! Tocamos Mas performs traditional Latin arrangements combining keyboards, congas, timbales, base guitar and vocals. Dancing Optional.
Rio Carrabelle is one of the music venues that annually hosts the Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Arts, Inc  INConcert series.
