Cold-stunned New England sea turtles get rehab in PCB

A number of sea turtles that were cold-stunned in New England have been moved to Panama City for rehab.

Last Friday, Gulf World Marine Institute received 50 endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles and 2 loggerhead sea turtles from the New England Aquarium.

The sea turtles were flown by a Michigan couple that donated their time and private plane to transport the turtles from New England to Panama City Beach.

The turtles are now at the Gulf World Marine Institute where they are being examined for signs of pneumonia, external wounds, internal foreign bodies and bone inflammation.

A large number of the turtles have signs of infection and are being treated with antibiotics.

Gulf World will rehabilitate the animals until they have been medically cleared for release.

When water temperatures fall below 40 degrees in shallow bays and estuaries, sea turtles can become shocked by the frigid temperatures.

If they aren't rescued they can drown.
