Franklin County hires Lisa Lance as new library director

Franklin County has hired a new director for the public library system.

The board agreed on Tuesday to hire Lisa Lance to head up the 2 libraries in Franklin county.

Mrs. Lance was chosen from a field of 6 candidates.

She is currently working at the library system in Panama city but will relocate with her family to Franklin County.

Mrs. Lance has a bachelors degree in library science and will work over the next three years to earn her masters degree.

The Masters degree is required by the state to oversee many of the state grants that help fund the local library system.

Mrs. Lance will fill the spot left open by the retirement of Anne Birchwell who left the library on October 23rd citing health reasons.

Commissioners said they would rater have hired someone from within the county, but none of the local applicants met the minimum requirements for the job.

The board felt it had no choice because it could not afford to lose state grant money.

Commissioner Noah Lockley voted against the hiring.

The library will still need to hire an assistant director – that will be done once Mrs. Lance starts her new job and is a position to assist with the hiring.
