County commissioners have agreed to close the recycling center in Apalachicola because of illegal dumping there

County commissioners have agreed to close the recycling center in Apalachicola because of illegal dumping there.

Commissioners voted Tuesday to remove the recycling bins on Commerce Street until the issue can be fixed.

Commissioners said the problem of illegal dumping has been going on for a number of years and has been made worse because of a city owned trash dumpster at the site which is intended to be used by businesses.

When the dumpster gets filled then people throw their trash on the ground or in the recycling bins.

County Commission chairman Smokey Parrish said its not only household trash, but big items like couches and mattresses that are being dumped there and unfortunately people are expecting the county to clean up the mess.

The Apalachicola recycling site will be closed indefinitely while the solid waste department figures out how to deal with the problem.

This is now the second site to be closed because of illegal dumping – the recycling bins at Alligator Point were closed in 2016 for the same reason.

Commissioners have discussed mandatory garbage pickup but have not yet taken any action on that proposal.

There are still recycling sites in the county -

Franklin County residents can recycle cardboard, newspaper, plastic, aluminum, tin & glass at Vrooman Park in Eastpoint and at the county landfill; there are also recycling bins at St. James Bay.

In Carrabelle you can recycle at Gray Avenue at the old Carrabelle High School; on St. George Island the recycling bins are on west Bayshore Drive.
