Gulf World Marine Institute in Panama City will release 6 sea turtles from St. Joe Beach on Thursday morning

Gulf World Marine Institute in Panama City will release 6 sea turtles from St. Joe Beach on Thursday morning.

Four of the turtles were rescued in January along with nearly 1200 others during the largest recorded cold-stun event in the Florida Panhandle.

Most of those turtles were already released, however, there were several that required additional treatment due to secondary illnesses such as pneumonia.

One, named Paddy, was released on July 17th in Mexico Beach and then re-stranded on July the 27th for unknown reasons.

The sixth turtle, called Rocket, was rescued on March 25th off of Crooked Island covered in barnacles and extremely malnourished.

Each animal was given individual care and all are diving and foraging successfully and have been medically cleared for release.

The six green sea turtles will be released into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, August 9th at 10:00 am eastern time.

The release will take place at the beach across from the Lookout Lounge.

The public is invited to watch the event.
