Franklin County will recognize September 21st as POW/MIA recognition day

Franklin County will recognize September 21st as POW/MIA recognition day.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed across the country on the third Friday of September to remember those who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action, as well as their families.

According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, over 83 thousand American soldiers are unaccounted for, including over 73 thousand from World War II.

There are also about 7,800 missing from the Korean War, and 1600 from Vietnam.

There are 6 soldiers missing from conflicts since 1991.

Franklin county veteran's service officer Charles Elliot told commissioners there are residents in Franklin County who have family members they are still waiting for.

Elliot said he would place posters around the area to remind people of the day and he will ask the county commission to sign an official resolution at their next meeting.
