The Gulf Specimen Marine Lab in Panacea
has been awarded $485,000 in a Florida Disaster Fund grant.
The award was announced by the
Volunteer Florida Foundation as part of a 6.6 million dollar grant
program awarded to organizations engaged in Hurricane Irma and
Hurricane Michael long-term recovery efforts.
The funding will allow the Gulf
Specimen Marine Laboratory to repair its building so that it may
continue to house important aquatic life and host educational
programs for visitors and students.
In total, ten groups were awarded
funding to help with Hurricane Michael recovery efforts, including
Doorways of Northwest Florida to provide nutritional meals and basic
services to families in continued need due to Hurricane Michael.
A group called Feeding the Gulf Coast also received funding to provide 583,000 additional meals to households struggling with food insecurity as a result of Hurricane Michael.
