Stories from the Seaside at Panacea - A newsletter from the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab in Panacea

MAY 2020
Monthly Newsletter Update:
Sea Turtle Rescue Program
Meet our new sea turtle, Myrtle! Myrtle is one of the biggest Kemp's Ridley sea turtle we have ever rescued. She was named by our Facebook followers through an online poll. Myrtle was found by a shrimp trawler out at Alligator Point. When she was brought in we found a deep, small wound at the back of her neck. Dr Griggs from the Shepherd Spring Animal Hospital has prescribed her some antibiotics to prevent an infection. Myrtle has one last check up before she is hopefully deemed ready for release. Look out for another virtual sea turtle release that we will be filming with the Alligator Sea Turtle Patrol soon.

Research and Events...
Research Update:

Melanie Medina is currently working on her PhD at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Her research is about the nudibranch population in North Florida that has never been studied before. Gulf Specimen is supplying sea slugs like the ones in the picture to help Melanie in her research towards these tiny molluscs. Just last Thursday, we found a rare tiger nudibranch on one of our collecting trawls. Melanie will be sending a specimen to the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. Her research is important because it will shine a light on the very under-studied nudibranch population and species in North Florida.

During the pandemic, Melanie has also been filming "virtual lab sessions" for her marine biology class in FSU. Click here to watch a short virtual lab of Melanie with our tiger nudibranchs!
