Weekend storm surge forces emergency closure of some oyster harvesting areas

The Department of Agriculture will close oyster harvesting areas 1612 and 1622 of the Apalachicola Bay at sunset today.

They will also close area 1512 in Indian Lagoon.

Area 1612 is the conditionally approved Winter West Shellfish Harvest Area – it includes the Green Point Bar.

Area 1622 is the conditionally approved winter west 2 area which includes Dry Bar.

Area 1512 is the conditionally approved Indian Lagoon Shellfish harvesting area.

The areas are being closed on an emergency basis because of the storm surge our area saw over the weekend due to Tropical Storm Cristobal.

The areas will be reopened when sampling shows the water quality is acceptable for harvesting.
