An endangered red wolf has escaped from St. Vincent Island and the Port St. Joe police say it was spotted in Port St. Joe on Tuesday

An endangered red wolf has escaped from St. Vincent Island and the Port St. Joe police say it was spotted in Port St. Joe on Tuesday.


Red wolves kind of look like coyotes and are about 60 pounds.


You should be able to recognize the animal because it is wearing a large leather GPS collar.

Red Wolves escaping from St. Vincent Island is a very rare occurrence.


The last time it happened was in 2006 and that wolf was recaptured very quickly.


Red Wolves are one of the most critically endangered mammals in the world with a total population estimated at 250 to 300 animals and most of those are in zoos.


St. Vincent Island has served as a breeding site for the species since 1990.
