New Report Provides Recommendations on NOAA Fisheries Budget Process, Aligning Funding to Mission Priorities, Engagement

The findings of an evaluation conducted by the National Academy of Public Administration are summarized in NAPA's “National Marine Fisheries Service Budget Structure and Allocation Review.” The evaluation provides a valuable opportunity for NOAA Fisheries to move forward on improving our budget process, better aligning funding to our mission priorities, and expanding our communications with Congress and our partners and stakeholders.


2021 Prescott Marine Animal Rescue Assistance Grants Announced

NOAA Fisheries is awarding 55 grants totaling more than $3.7 million to our partners in the Marine Mammal Stranding Network in 19 states and one tribe. These grants support a core mission of NOAA Fisheries: the conservation and recovery of protected marine species.

What Fish Fat Can Tell About the Value of Deep-Sea Coral and Sponge Habitat

A new NOAA Fisheries study is the first to look at the relationship between fish condition and reproductive success in a variety of habitats, focusing on deep-sea coral and sponge ecosystems. As part of the study, scientists are developing methods to accurately assess rockfish condition by measuring fat content.

Amended Plan Leaves More Salmon for Endangered Killer Whales in Low Return Years

Following nearly 40,000 public comments, NOAA Fisheries is approving an amendment to the fishery management plan for Chinook salmon off the West Coast. It will make more fish available for endangered Southern Resident killer whales in years when salmon returns are low.

Climate Change Is Already Affecting Chesapeake Bay Fisheries

The Chesapeake Bay is home to more than 3,600 species of plants and animals. That includes 348 species of finfish, 173 species of shellfish, and more than 16 species of underwater grasses. But climate change is affecting Chesapeake Bay habitats and the species that rely on them. As habitats change, some species find challenges, while others may see opportunities.


Squid Processors Lend a Hand to Increase Data on a Short-Lived Species

Researchers from the Northeast Fisheries Science Center have installed a new electronic data collection system at five shortfin squid processing facilities across the region. With a lot of squid available to measure, researchers hope this pilot project will show that processors can help increase the amount of real-time data on this relatively short-lived species.
