Culture and Lots of Outdoor Activities on Tap this month

SGI Tour of Homes Saturday, February 12, 2022
After a hiatus in 2021, the Tenth Annual St. George Island Tour of Homes is back and scheduled for Saturday, February 12, 2022. The tour benefits the St. George Lighthouse Association (SGLA). This year’s tour will feature six unique and attractive homes, from the gated St. George Plantation on the West to the beautiful gulf views on the East End. These homes showcase the distinct architecture, décor, landscape, and vistas on the island. Hours of the tour are from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, February 12, 2022.

February 6 - Leon Anderson - Apalachicola
The Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Arts will host A Tribute to New Orleans Music featuring the Leon Anderson Jazz Ensemble on February 6, 2022, at 4 P.M. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola. Jazz percussionist Leon Anderson has put together an ensemble of outstanding musicians including Scotty Barnhardt on trumpet, Joe Goldberg on clarinet/sax/flute, Bill Peterson at the piano, and Rodney Jordan on bass. Together they’ll perform a tribute to New Orleans jazz music that honors jazz pioneers such as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Sidney Bechet, and Ellis Marsalis.

February 11 - Darryl Tookes Valentine's Special - Carrabelle
The Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Arts presents A Valentine Special featuring Darryl Tookes, vocalist/pianist/composer on February 11, at 8 P.M. at Rio Carrabelle. What better way to prepare for Valentine’s Day than listening to the incredible voice of Darryl Tookes as he performs his Romantic Songs program, featuring music of Cole Porter along with favorite songs and ballads from the American Jazz Songbook. Tookes’ career has included performing with Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, Carly Simon, Aretha Franklin, and many others. He’s performed for Presidents Clinton and Obama as well as dignitaries such as Desmond Tutu, Elizabeth Taylor, Muhammad Ali, and Audrey Hepburn. He is considered by the music industry to be a performer of unequaled stature. 
February 20 - FSU Percussion Ensemble - Apalachicola
The Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Arts will host the FSU Percussion Ensemble at 4 pm February 20 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola. The Percussion Ensemble from Florida State University is known as one of the best in the country, winning Percussion Ensemble Competitions and producing critically acclaimed recordings. They perform at music festivals throughout the country. Their concert will feature percussion classics such as “Rhapsody for Vibraphone and Marimba” by Michael Taylor and “Slopes” by Paul Rennick. 
February 25 - World Jazz Trio - Carrabelle
The Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Arts presents World Jazz Trio on February 25, 8 P.M. at Carrabelle's Rio Carrabelle.  Jazz musicians Brian Hall on bass and Michael Bakan on percussion are two of Tallahassee’s most popular performers. Along with a vocalist, they are putting together an evening of entertainment that features Jazz and Pop standards along with modern and contemporary sounds.

Lighthouse Climbs February 16
St. George Island’s historic Cape St. George Lighthouse and the Crooked River Lighthouse at Carrabelle Beach will each host Full Moon Climbs on Wednesday February 16 from 6-8 pm. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse to see views of the bay as the sun sets and the moon rises. 
Adventure Partner Workshop in Apalachicola this month
Adventure tourism partners interested in growing their business may want to attend a February 17-18 workshop hosted by VISIT FLORIDA and the Adventure Travel and Trade Association. The two day workshop, to be held in Apalachicola, will help area businesses strengthen their capacity to compete in the adventure travel market. HCOLA History Festival February 19-21
H’COLA’s  Annual African-American History Festival will be held February 19-21. This event is a celebration of African-American history, life, music, and culture. This outdoor, family-oriented event is filled with varied artists and entertainers, children’s activities, arts, history, education, health & wellness, and more.  There will be live entertainment throughout the two-day event. 
SGI Charity Chili Cookoff March 3-5
The St. George Island Regional Charity Chili Cook-off & Auction will be held Thursday through Saturday, March 3-5. In addition to the main chili cooking event, this three-day family-friendly event features a Golf tournament, silent auction, food vendors and lots of musical entertainment. The chili cookoff is the primary fundraising event for the St. George Island Volunteer Fire Department (SGIVFD). 
Eastpoint Fire Department Charity Rib Cookoff March 19
The Annual Eastpoint Volunteer Fire Department Charity Rib Cookoff will be held Saturday, March 19 at the fire house in Eastpoint.  BBQ dinners will be served from 11am. 

Forgotten Coast Paint-Out March 18-27
The Forgotten Coast en Plein Air Paint-out will be held March 18-27 throughout Franklin county. Now in the 17th year of documenting the landscape and culture of the last vestige of authentic “Old Florida,” Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s Great Paint-out, is among the world’s most prestigious plein air events. Artistic excellence and the production of investment quality art continues to be the trademark of this 10-day cultural art event.  

Carrabelle Culture Crawl March 19
The  Carrabelle Culture Crawl, hosted by the Carrabelle History Museum, will be held on Saturday, March 19. The free celebration of art, music, history, food, and fun in the heart of downtown Carrabelle, and will take place on March 19 from 10 am to 3 pm.  The event will feature the popular Fishy Fashion show and new to the event this year will be a scavenger hunt. 

Camp Gordon Johnston Presents Black WWII Exhibit During February
In commemoration of Black History Month, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present an exhibit on the history of two Black Amphibious Truck Companies during February. These are two of several Amphibious Truck Companies that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston during World War II. This exhibit will run from February 1-26. Details.
Panhandle Players Present Accidentally Wealthy Feb. 11-13
The Panhandle Players will perform Accidentally Wealthy at Apalachicola's Chapman Theater on Friday through Sunday, February 11-13. The play chronicles the story of Reggie and Grace Worthing, recent newlyweds embarking on their new life together, a new life marred by tragic pasts.  Both were widowed under mysterious circumstances.  Accidents? Suicide? Or was it murder?  Or, are they truly Accidentally Wealthy? 
History of Turpentine Industry February 12
The Carrabelle History Museum will present a history program entitled, “History of the Turpentine Industry in North Florida” featuring Barbara Clark, North Central Region Director for Florida Public Archaeology (FPAN). This free program will be held 10 am Saturday, February 12 in the upstairs room at C-Quarters Marina, 501 St. James Ave (Hwy 98), Carrabelle. Learn about the impact the turpentine industry also known as naval stores, had on Florida’s history and economy.  Details.
Apalachicola Barkus Parade February 26
The 11th Annual Apalachicola Mardi Gras Barkus Parade will be celebrated Saturday, February 26. This popular pet themed event will take place from 11am – 4pm at Apalachicola's Riverfront Park. Festivities will include live entertainment,  local food vendors, and a variety of arts and craft vendors to enjoy while strolling through the park. In the tradition of the Mystic Krewe of Salty Barkers, profits from the parade will be donated to help care for the animals of the Forgotten Coast of Florida.
