Franklin County commissioners have approved a feasibility study to help decide what the county will do when the landfill on Highway 65 has to be closed.

The current landfill site includes a Class III landfill, which handles yard debris, construction and demolition debris only, a closed and inactive Class I landfill, a composting operation, a yard trash processing operation, and a waste tire collection center.

The current landfill is only expected to have a remaining useful life of about 10 more years before it reaches capacity.

At that point it will cost about 4.5 million dollars to close the site and about 55 thousand dollars a year for long-term care post closure.

At this point the county has to decide whether to construct and permit a new landfill or to transition to a transfer station operation similar to many other coastal counties like Gulf County.

The feasibility study will help county commissioners weigh the counties options moving forward by establishing cost estimates between transitioning to a transfer station operation vs. a landfill expansion.

The Feasibility Study will be done by the County’s Engineers Dewberry & Associates.
