The Florida
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is looking for people to help them
monitor diamondback terrapin turtles.
Diamondback terrapins are small- to medium-sized
turtles found in coastal waters from the Gulf of Mexico to Massachusetts.
They
live in brackish water habitat where blue crabs tend to live, including salt
marshes, barrier islands, mangrove swamps, tidal creeks and rivers.
They have been studied across much of their
range, but the Florida Panhandle has long been an area where little data are
available.
As a result, very little is known about the life
history of this species in northwest Florida.
The FWC is looking for volunteers to walk along shorelines and look for
terrapins, tracks, or signs of nesting in several locations across the
Forgotten Coast.
If you would like to learn more, just send an
email to volunteer@myfwc.com with “Terrapin Watch”
in the subject line.
