The qualifying period for local elections closed on Friday, so now we know which local races to watch.
Many county-wide races went unopposed, so we will see a number of familiar faces return to their jobs.
Clerk of Court Michele Maxwell will continue to serve for another 4 years, as will Franklin County Sheriff AJ Smith.
Supervisor of Election, Heather Riley, was also unopposed in her race.
We will have a new Property Appraiser in the coming months.
James Terry Tipton Jr. did not receive an opponent in that race, so he will take over that job in the Fall from Rhonda Skipper who did not seek re-election this year.
There will be a race for Tax collector between Republican Amy Braxton Cook and Teresa Ann Martin, who has no party affiliation – one of them will replace Rick Watson, who is retiring this year.
There will also be a race for School Superintendent this year between incumbent Republican Steve Lanier and Democrat Jill Rudd.
District 5 County Commissioner Jessica Ward was unchallenged, so she will return to the Franklin County Commission.
District 1 Commission Ricky Jones, however, will face Russell Alan Turner for that seat – both candidates are running as Republicans.
District 3 commissioner Anthony Croom Jr., who was named to the position earlier this year after the death of Noah Lockley, will face Elinor Mount-Simmons for that seat.
Croom is running as a Republican and Mount-Simmons as a Democrat.
None of the school board members up for election this year drew any opposition, so Melonie Inzetta will continue to represent District 1, Fonda Davis will continue to serve District 3 and Jared Mock will continue to represent District 5.
County Judge, Jay Gordon Shuler was also unopposed in that race.
If you are not yet registered to vote, you need to do that by July 22nd – the primary election will be held on August 20th with early voting beginning on August 8th.
The general election will be held on November 5th, with early voting beginning on October 24th.
