The Tallahassee Museum has announced recent birth of a new litter of endangered red wolves

The Tallahassee Museum has announced recent birth of a new litter of endangered red wolves.

On April 26th, four-year-old female Arrow birthed two healthy pups, 1 male and 1 female.

This is Arrow’s first litter of puppies and the fourth litter of red wolf puppies to have been born at the Tallahassee Museum since 1988.

Red Wolves are one of the most critically endangered animals on the planet; in 2019 there were an estimated 250 to 300 animals.

The red wolf once roamed much of the southeastern United States, but was declared extinct in 1980.

Fourteen remaining red wolves were captured in Texas and Louisiana before the extinction declaration and were used to establish a breeding program in locations including St. Vincent Island in Franklin County.

St. Vincent Island has served as a breeding site for the species since 1990.

Red wolves born on St. Vincent Island are removed before they are 2 years old and shipped to eastern North Carolina to help augment the wild population.
