A growing number of contractors and private owners of coastal property are considering installing living shorelines, according to research Florida Sea Grant conducted and recently published in tandem with the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium.

Growing up in small-town Georgia, Stephanie Brown participated in Future Farmers of America. She also liked to watch cooking shows on TV, and she enjoyed science. Flash forward a couple of decades, and now she’s the state specialized agent for food science for UF/IFAS Extension in Southwest Florida.

A young black bear caused a stir at the University of Florida when it was spotted high up in a tree on the Gainesville campus. The unusual sight attracted a crowd, but officers quickly secured the scene, and students from the UF/IFAS wildlife, ecology and conservation department provided education to passersby until officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission arrived.

Here are just a few tips: Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are seeking blood. For many species, that is during dawn and dusk. Wear clothing that covers most of your skin.
