A Liberty County man was sentenced on Friday to 30 years in
prison for the 2021 killing of his girlfriend and the mother of his children.
24-year-old Traves Gilyard pleaded guilty to Aggravated
Manslaughter with a Firearm.
The incident happened on February 25th, 2021, at a home on
Gary Lane, which is just north of Bristol.
Officers called to the scene found a female deceased by her
bed in her bedroom.
The only other adult present was Gilyard, who claimed
to have been out of the room and that the victim must have shot herself while
playing with the firearm.
Gilyard admitted the firearm used in the incident belonged to
him even though he was a convicted felon.
Crime scene analysts said that the evidence showed that it
was impossible for the victim to have shot herself.
Officials with the Office of the State Attorney, said while
preparing for trial and with consultation with the victim’s surviving siblings,
Gilyard agreed to a plea agreement and will serve 30 years in the Department of
Corrections for the shooting.
