2010 already thedeadliest year on record for Florida manatees

2010 was not even 4 months old when it became the deadliest year on record for Florida’s manatees.

As of March 19th, biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute documented 431 manatee carcasses in state waters. That is already 2 more than the highest number of manatee deaths ever recoded in a full year.

The cause of death for the majority of the animals is cold stress – mostly brought on by subfreezing temperatures in January. Cold-stress is known to have killed 222 manatees and is the likely cause of death for at least 172 others that are currently listed as undetermined or unrecovered.
