Carrabelle and Apalachicola recieve federal money for water and sewer projects

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection says that the entire $218.9 million dollars in Clean Water State Revolving Fund and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund has now been allotted to various projects in the state including projects in Carrabelle and Apalachicola. The money was made available to Florida through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to help local governments across the state finance improvements to wastewater, stormwater and drinking water facilities.

Twenty-eight projects have been awarded stimulus funds totaling more than $132 million through the department’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund; that includes nearly eight and half million dollars for the city of Apalachicola. That money will help the city build a new wastewater reclamation facility. Once completed, the facility will take wastewater received from homes and businesses throughout the city and treat it for reuse in commercial and eventually residential applications.

Another 40 projects have been awarded more than $86 million through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. That includes a nearly three million dollar grant to the city of Carrabelle.

All local construction contracts have been awarded and all projects have started construction.

DEP received more than $850 million dollars in requests for the $86.6 million dollars of drinking water project funds and more than $1.5 billion in requests for $132.3 million in wastewater and stormwater funding.
