Marine officers will crack down on untrained boaters

Now that the weather is warming up and more people are heading out on the water, Florida marine officers say they will be enforcing new boating-safety education rules more strictly.

As of January the 1st power boat operators who were born on or after January the 1st, 1988, have to pass an approved boating-safety course before they can legally operate a boat with a motor of 10 horsepower or more. They also have to carry photographic identification and a boating-safety identification card.

There are a few exceptions.

For instance, a person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, who operates a boat within 90 days after purchasing it, does not need a boating-safety education identification card if a bill of sale is onboard. Those who possess a current United States Coast Guard license also are exempt.

People caught violating the new rule can face fines ranging from $50 to $80 dollars.
