Mosquito season starting early

Franklin County commissioners say they hope to begin their mosquito control program very soon.

The board said Tuesday that it is time to get the mosquito control department up and running because mosquitoes are coming out early this year. Heavy rainfall has left plenty of standing water so the local mosquito population has plenty of sites to lay eggs.

Franklin County does spray for mosquitoes and while the service does help control the mosquito population, it still falls to residents to do their part too. Homeowners should remove standing water from their property, as stagnant water in bird baths, old tires and kiddy pools make excellent breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

To protect yourself from mosquito borne diseases residents should avoid the out-of-doors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active; wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks, when venturing outside during those hours; and using an insect repellent containing either DEET or Picaridin.
