North Carolina State University forsees a busy hurricane season

Researchers at North Carolina State University have joined other hurricane prediction teams in saying the upcoming hurricane season will be an active one.

The group on Monday forecast 15 to 18 named storms during the season which runs from June the 1st through November the 30th. An average season is 9 to 11 storms.

The forecasters believe 8 to 11 of the named storms could reach hurricane strength and there is an 80 percent chance that one of the named storms will make landfall along the southeastern U.S. coast.

The forecasters said they feel at least 3 of the named storms will make landfall along the Gulf Coast this year and a 55 percent chance the gulf coast will be hit by at least one major hurricane of Category 3 or higher.
