BP offers second "vessel of opportunity" class today

BP will offer a class on basic oil spill response this afternoon at the Armory in Apalachicola. The class, called a vessel of opportunity call, will provide an overview of safety measures that have to be taken and also of the various types of jobs that can be done to combat the oil spill if it moves into our area.

It is for captains and deck hands.

The class is limited to 250 people – people can sign up at the door on a first come first served basis. A similar class held on Saturday filled up quickly.

The Vessel of opportunity class is necessary if you do hope to be hired by BP to help in the oil spill response. It does not guarantee you will be hired, but people who are selected after the class will get additional training in the specific area in which they would be working.

People who own boats anywhere between 18 and 70 feet could be needed to help combat the oil slick – but BP said it would be especially grateful for owners of the larger boats to take part because they will be able to work further out in the Gulf before the oil gets too close to land.
