Franklin County beaches oil and (mostly) bacteria- free

The water in Franklin County should be fine for swimming this weekend. The Department of Health has issued no swimming advisories in Franklin County again this week.

They did find moderate levels of the enterococcus bacteria at Carrabelle beach but not in high enough concentrations to require a swimming advisory.

There was one advisory issued for Shell Point in Wakulla County and none for Gulf County.

The Florida Department of Health takes weekly water samples from swimming area around Florida to make sure there are no dangerous bacteria in the water.

So far no Florida has been affected by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Local tourism officials say they want people to know that there are currently no impacts to Franklin County’s beaches.

Many of the communities are hosting festivals and events beginning this weekend including the Forgotten Coast Plein Air Invitational and the Apalachicola Artwalk and Wine Fest.

If any of the Franklin County communities or events are impacted by the oil spill, the Franklin County TDC website www.anaturalescape.com will be updated to reflect changing conditions. Visitors and residents are also encouraged to check in on local conditions at the Franklin County Emergency Management website at www.franklinemergencymanagement.com.
