Local boat owners urged to attend basic oil spill response class on Saturday

Local fishermen and other local boat owners who would like to offer their services to combat the oil spill in the Gulf need to register now for a class BP will hold in Apalachicola on Saturday.

The class will be held from 1 until 5 PM at the Armory in Apalachicola.

The class is on basic oil spill response and will provide an overview of safety measures that have to be taken and also of the various types of jobs that can be done to combat the oil spill if it moves into our area.

In order to take part in the class, boat owners need to pre-register and provide information about their boats.

People who own boats anywhere between 18 and 70 feet are eligible to take part – but BP said it would be especially grateful for owners of the larger boats to take part because they will be able to work further out in the Gulf before the oil gets too close to land.

People who have already registered their boats as a vessel of opportunity should be contacted by phone about the class.

If you have a boat and have not registered it, you can do so at the Emergency Management Office or with the Franklin County Seafood Workers Association.

You can also call 281-366-5511 or visit the Franklin County Emergency management website at www.

BP representatives say people can also sign up at the class on Saturday, but the class will be closed once there are 275 people registered.

The class is necessary if you do hope to be hired by BP to help in the oil spill response.

It does not guarantee you will be hired, but people who are selected after the class will get additional training in the specific area in which they would be working.
