A press release from the Franklin County Emergency Management Office
~Local input to strengthen final plan~
APALACHICOLA- Day two completed work for the Franklin County Contingency Plan Committee to develop plans for booms to protect the county waterways. The committee met yesterday and today in a workshop venue to review a plan that outlines booming strategies.
“We are happy to be a part of the process.” says Franklin County Board of Commission Chair Joseph ’Smokey’ Parrish. “It is important for local contributions. Some people have grown-up here and have 40-50 years of knowledge about our waters. “
Franklin County is one of several counties that are working on their contingency plan. The goal of the committee was to pre-determine areas in the Franklin County waterways that need the highest protection priority. This will be matched with resources to include the required equipment and personnel that will be needed.
Over 40 people attended day one of the workshop. Representatives including local government elected officials, county workers, state and federal agencies, local fishing industry representatives, contract support staff and other county stakeholders met to gather local input and compile recommendations for boom placement indicated in the current plan.
The original plan outlines over 50 oil spill sensitive areas of concern. Each area was then reviewed to the type of booming that is available. Some areas in the plan may remain as noted; some may be added. The revised recommended plan will be sent back to The Division of Emergency Management who will compile a statewide plan that will be forward to the Unified Command in Mobile, Alabama.
