Nearly 20 percent of federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico closed to fishing

Nearly 46 thousand square miles of the Gulf of Mexico are now closed to fishing because of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill which continues to pump oil into the Gulf.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has shut down fishing in 19 percent of the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. That's up from 10 percent that NOAA had ordered closed to fishing Monday and 8 percent that was closed last Friday.

The closure extends from Louisiana to just south of Pensacola and well out into the Gulf of Mexico.
