Franklin County commission chairman Smokey Parrish and Emergency Management Director Pamela Brownell were recognized Tuesday by the local Rotary Club for the work the two have done in protecting Franklin County from the impacts of the BP oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Rotary club presented plaques to each of the two for exceptional leadership and persistence during the first 100 days of the Gulf’s Deepwater Horizon “Spill of National Significance.”
Both have played major roles not only in helping craft the plan to protect the Apalachicola Bay from any oil but also in drawing state and federal attention to Franklin County’s needs during the first 100 days of the disaster.
The Rotary club presented the plaques during their meeting at the Grill Restaurant in Apalachicola in from of about 25 people.
Besides providing the plaques the Rotary also welcomed ABC principal Chimene Johnson to the group – she replaces retiring Principal Don Hungerford.
The 22 member service organization is made up of local business and government leaders,
The group raises money for the international eradication of polio, and locally provides scholarships for high school seniors, provides dictionaries in 2 languages to local grade schools, helps fund local libraries and their programs, and sends local 10th graders to leadership camp every year.
