Permits? We don't need no stinking permits!

Even though the Department of Agriculture has extended the sale of oyster harvesting licenses through August 31st there are still some oystermen who have not bought theirs yet.

Fish and wildlife officers say they caught one last week.

FWC Lieutenant Kent Harvey was on water patrol near East Hole oyster when he stopped a couple of men tonging oysters.

One of the men did not have an Apalachicola Bay harvesting permit or a saltwater products license and it turned out he had never possessed either license.

The man received a warning and was told to have a license next time he returned to the oyster bar.

The next day, Lieutenant Harvey found the same two men again harvesting oysters and again the man did not have an oyster permit or saltwater products license.

There was no warning the second time – this time the oysterman was fined for not having a permit as well as for numerous boating safety violations, for which he was warned the day before.
