Aug. 13 Beach & Seafood Report - Click Here  Come and take a drive on the "Wild Side" along Florida’s Big Bend Scenic Byway that runs through Franklin County. There's lots to do and see along the way. This weekend, enjoy snow cones and a concert along the Apalachicola River as part of the month-long Water Street Festival of Ice in Apalachicola. Wet a hook during the Franklin County Sheriff's Dept. Inshore Fishing Tournament or make a date to see Elvis at the Dixie Theatre. Click here to see all area events and festivities happening this month.   August 13 Update: Earlier this week NOAA reopened 5,144 square miles of Gulf waters to commercial and recreational finfish fishing. Since July 3, NOAA data have shown no oil in the area, and United States Coast Guard observers flying over the area in the last 30 days have also not observed any oil. Trajectory models show the area is at a low risk for future exposure to oil and, most importantly, fish caught in the area and tested by NOAA experts have shown no signs of contamination.   Franklin County's beaches are clean and our seafood is delicious! C'mon down!   This fall, the Franklin County Tourist Development Council (FCTDC) will join Visit Florida in launching the first in what it hopes will be a continuing series of Franklin County-based Natural Florida Getaways to be promoted at each of the five State Welcome Centers. The first promotional campaign, scheduled to run September through October, is intended to boost visitor interest in our area during the offseason. Visit Florida officials say it is expected to be seen by an estimated 300,000 visitors during the two months. The first Getaway campaign will feature St. George Island - one of Franklin County's premiere natural beaches. Resort Vacation Properties is donating the first getaway vacation which will also feature a guided kayak tour from Journeys of St. George Island, a lighthouse tour and tee shirts as well as a meal for two donated by the Blue Parrot Oceanfront Cafe.  Additional campaigns are being developed for Apalachicola, Carrabelle, Alligator Point and even a special natural getaway fishing vacation.
