Sea turtle nests will no longer be moved from Franklin County beaches

This is a note from the Emergency Management Office - I expect more information soon.

Folks,

Yesterday afternoon during the wildlife leads call Kipp Frohlich stated that moving sea turtle nests from Gulf and Franklin counties was going to be stopped and that a press release is being prepared to notify the public of that fact.

This is to ask that you get in touch with your contacts with Gulf and Franklin counties and let them know that sea turtle nests in their counties are no longer going to be moved because of improved conditions in the Gulf, especially out in areas where the sargasso collects.  Those are areas where juvenile sea turtles also tend to congregate so we now have some confidence that juveniles released into the Gulf from their counties won’t face much problem from oil at this point.  FWC biologists went out to survey the sargasso areas and saw conditions that appeared healthy for the juveniles with a lot of potential prey items apparent there.

If you need more specific information on the release of the juveniles you can contact Robbin Trindell or Kipp Frohlich.
