August 4 Update:  The Deepwater Horizon oil well is now "static" following hours of pumping heavy drilling mud into the broken well shaft. If all goes well, the next step will be to fill and seal the shaft with cement. In the meantime, NOAA officials report that no recoverable oil has been reported from aerial recon flights since July 31 and the threat of new shoreline impacts is low.   Franklin County is one of the fortunate areas along the Gulf that has not been directly impacted this summer. Our beaches are clean; our seafood is delicious and safe to eat.   August heralds the beginning of Franklin County's fall event  season. Beginning this month, you can pay tribute to Dr. John Gorrie, inventor of the ice machine during the month-long Water Street Festival of Ice. The event kicks off in Apalachicola this weekend with an Ice Cream Churn-off and a Retro Dance Party. Other events this weekend include a Dog Days of Summer Pet Celebration at the Coombs House Inn and a tribute to Patsy Cline at the Dixie Theatre. On Aug. 14,  you can wet a line during the 2nd Annual Franklin County Sheriff's Department Fishing Tournament. On that same day, don't miss Elvis at the Dixie Theatre. Later in the month, plan to attend the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival in Carrabelle and Apalachicola.   The Carrabelle Web Cam is now online!
