August 4 Update: The Deepwater Horizon oil well is now "static" following hours of pumping heavy drilling mud into the broken well shaft. If all goes well, the next step will be to fill and seal the shaft with cement. In the meantime, NOAA officials report that no recoverable oil has been reported from aerial recon flights since July 31 and the threat of new shoreline impacts is low. Franklin County is one of the fortunate areas along the Gulf that has not been directly impacted this summer. Our beaches are clean; our seafood is delicious and safe to eat.
