Franklin County commissioners are doing what they can to help the Apalachicola Riverkeeper get reimbursed for the work that group has done to respond to the BP oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico.
Since the oil gusher began in April the local Riverkeeper group has been hard at work monitoring the spill, helping create the county boom plan and developing additional protection plans for the bay.
The group was also instrumental in overseeing local volunteer efforts like beach clean-ups.
The problem is that BP does not have a process for non-profit groups to seek reimbursement for their expenses and the Riverkeepers can’t file a claim against BP because the group did not actually lose income because of the oil gusher.
Riverkeeper Executive Director Andy Smith said that his group has “busted its budget” on the oil gusher response.
The county commission said it will do what it can to help seek reimbursement for the Riverkeepers – they will begin by submitting a repayment request on behalf of the group along with a letter of support for the Riverkeepers.
