Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council seeks input on extending recreational red snapper season

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is asking for public input on when they would like to see a reopening the recreational red snapper season in the Gulf of Mexico.

This year’s overall snapper quota was set at 6.9 million pounds but its very likely the quota was never reached because the season was only 53 day long and much of the Gulf was closed to fishing because of the BP oil gusher.

NOAA Fisheries Service is currently calculating how many red snapper were caught this year and if the recreational quota was not filled, the season could be reopened after September 30th.

The decision will likely be made during the Council’s August 16- 20 meeting in Pensacola when the Gulf Council gets updated information on areas cleared for reopening, along with the amount of remaining recreational red snapper quota, and the projected length of any supplemental season.

Until then the Gulf Council is seeking input from the public on when - between September 30 and December 31 - the season should reopen.
