Weekend death of young woman on St. George Island ruled suicide

On Friday August 6, 2010 at approximately 9:54 PM, deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 medical call at 740 West Gulf Beach Drive, St. George Island, Florida.  Deputies discovered the deceased body of a white female whose family was renting the residence.  Deputies secured the scene and began their investigation of the circumstances surrounding the death of the female.  Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Scene Investigators and Agents were called to assist the Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.  

Upon completion of the crime scene investigation the body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Tallahassee for an autopsy, which was conducted on Saturday morning of August 7, 2010.  Preliminary investigative and autopsy results indicate the cause of death to be self inflicted by hanging.  Foul play is not suspected in the death. The body of the victim, April Bachtel, age 22 of Athens, Georgia has been released to her family in Georgia.  The investigation is continuing pending final autopsy reports and findings.
