Cold snap hits sea turtles hard

The cold snap earlier this month hit Florida’s sea turtle population pretty hard.

Hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles had to be rescued from cold waters around the state

Rescuers pulled more than 250 stunned turtles from waters reaching from Cape Canaveral to Gulf County.

Its believed that nearly 40 turtles were stunned in Gulf County waters – many of them have been taken to Gulf World aquarium in Panama City for treatment.

This is the first time that Gulf World has received turtles this early in the month of December.

Most of the sea turtles affected by the recent cold weather in Florida are green turtles, with smaller numbers of loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys, as well as one hawksbill turtle.

FWC biologists predict the majority of the affected turtles will survive.

If you should find a stranded sea turtles or any other distressed wildlife you can report it to the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC.
