County commissioners have sent a letter of thanks to Carrabelle resident George Jackson for the work he has done to provide food to needy families in the area and are asking another local group to do more in the effort.
The board said George Jackson has gone beyond the call of duty by traveling to Quincy at his own expense and with his own truck and trailer to pick up food at the Farmshare Distribution center.
The food he brings in is distributed from the Senior center in Carrabelle and has helped numerous families in the county.
Commissioners are now concerned that people in Eastpoint and Apalachicola, however, might not have easy access to the free food.
One of the problems is that farmshare provides fresh produce which needs to be kept cool, and while the senior center in Carrabelle has some coolers, there is no adequate cooler system in Apalachicola.
Mister Jackson said he would be willing to provide additional trips to get food to Eastpoint and Apalachicola but commissioners feel he is already doing enough.
The county said it will contact the Franklin’s Promise organization about gathering and distributing Farmshare food on the western end of the county.
